What the Five Elements are

Wu Xing (五行) is often translated as Five Elements, but “five phases” better suggests motion and relationship. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water describe cycles of generation and control in traditional Chinese thought.

How Pillar Atlas counts

Each visible heavenly stem and earthly branch contributes one count to its associated element. A complete chart has four stems and four branches, so the total is eight. If birth time is unknown, the hour pillar is omitted and the count totals six. Hidden stems appear in each pillar card but are not included in the bar chart.

What the chart does not calculate

We do not label an element “favorable,” determine chart strength, apply seasonal coefficients, or recommend colors, investments, health choices, or life changes from this count. Those methods require additional rules and are debated across schools. If we add one later, it will receive a separate versioned method and regression set.

A responsible way to use the view

Look for a question rather than a verdict. If one phase dominates the visible chart, ask where that metaphor feels useful and where it fails. Compare the prompt with real behavior and context.
